Dad, Grandad and Granny ...

I've been scanning some of my old black and white photographs. I don't know whether this will work but here's my Dad, Fred, sitting on a Fordson Major tractor with a binder behind. Sitting on the binder is my grandfather, Charlie Wildgoose, and my grandmother Beatrice.

  1. A wonderful old family memory. When was it taken, do you know?

    1. I would say it was taken in the 1930s Mitch. I think the 1940s might be too late.

    1. I'm glad you like it Pet. Yes, bittersweet in some ways but I can't change what has happened. If I could I would never have had my children ...

  4. You are so clever to figure out how to do this. I was impressed with the vest, jacket and tie on a tractor. People don't even dress that well to go to church anymore. But they probably smell better, with showers and shampoos etc. My father-in-law thought you would get sick if you had more than one bath a season. You took off your longjohns for washing when you heard the crows come back from migrating south, or the ducks/geese.

    1. I surprised myself Karyn ~ I didn't know whether it would work. If I had been more confident I would have entitled this 'A flock of Wildgooses' instead of 'Dad, Grandad and Granny ...' !

I rather assume Dad was posing for this photo and that's why he got dressed up. When he was farming he either wore a battered beret ['berry' we called it] or a battered flat cap ~ both of which had become moulded to the shape of his head. If he was going out then he would always look very smart ... rather like in this photo.
