A Farm Journal ~ from the 3rd to the 8th March 1870

My great great great uncle John Bayliff Bowman lived at Summer Hill, near Monyash in the County of Derby, until the end of January 1870 when he moved to Sandycroft Farm, Queensferry, Flintshire.

The Bowman family, who were Quakers, had rented three farms, One Ash Grange [which John Bayliff Bowman often referred to as O.A.], Cales and Summer Hill [which he usually referred to as S.Hill or S.H.]

John Bayliff Bowman is fourth from the left in the photo below ...

  3. I thought mini stroke too for father. We forget how strapped folk were without our modern vaccines and medicines. Life really was more precious then. I know we have problems with too many antibiotics being used but I don't want to go back even to my childhood when you were in darkened rooms for 10 days due to most recent epidemic.

    2. Good afternoon Pet. I haven't been feeling as well as I would have liked. For the past few weeks I have been feeling less than enthusiastic with a couple of hospital visits which has resulted in me being taken off morphine-based painkillers [as I had a rash on both my arms]. In addition I have developed lymphoedema in my left leg [as well as having it in my right leg already].

      I am due to go back to the hospice on Wednesday to discuss and/or be measured up for a compression stocking for the lymphoedema in my left leg. Then two weeks after that I am due to attend my oncologist regarding a follow up appointment.

    During the past few weeks I have been given :~

    [1] A blue 'disabled' badge for my car ~ not that I am driving it;
    [2] Courtesy of the National Health Service, an indoor zimmer and an outdoor zimmer, a wheelchair; a handrail to help me use the stairs and a fitting to help me get in and out of the bath; and
    [3] Courtesy of the Department for Work and Pensions just under £135 a week, due to me being in poor health and needing assistance.

    I have gone downhill rather rapidly. Hopefully things will improve [though I have an open mind]. Watch the space !

    1. Thank you Ann. I would have let you know more sooner than this but time has flown by these last few weeks.

      It's been a sunny afternoon [some of the time] here in Darley Dale and Derby County have won away from home. Things could be worse.

    1. I think Nigel Clough did a good job but he was hampered either because he wasn't given enough money or because he was rather lacking tactically.
      He bought some good players but one or two duds too.

      I hope your weather is better than ours is now Ann.

  10. I thought that I had replied ... maybe I did? I'm thankful that you replied, Charlie. I was worried about you. I'm glad that medical assistance continues to be on top of things and helpful.
