A Farm Journal ~ from the 19th to the 31st March 1868

My great great great uncle John Bayliff Bowman lived at Summer Hill, near Monyash in the County of Derby.

The Bowman family, who were Quakers, had three farms, One Ash Grange [which John Bayliff Bowman often referred to as O.A.], Cales and Summer Hill [which he usually referred to as S.Hill or S.H.]

I'm not sure what a 'harmers cupboard' is but that's what it looks like in the journal.

Living in Monyash in 1861 was a Robert Heathcote. He was a 'boarder' with the family of Thomas Bonsall, a Lead Miner. Robert was 45 and unmarried. His occupation ? Joiner.

  1. I was going to ask what a 'harmers cupboard' was, so I'll ask what a 'basket gig' is instead!!

    1. There's a photo of a horse and a gig here ~ http://www.nzmuseums.co.nz/account/3021/object/38742/Photograph_%5BJack_Ford_with_horse_and_gig%5D ~ and then there's some information on types of gig here ~ http://www.coachmansdelight.com/CGuidePage.asp?pg=GUI15&k=15&s=#g48 ... a gig seems to have been, in short, a two wheeled vehicle pulled by one horse [usually] for two people.

    1. JBB seems to come up with something new every blog or two ... this time he came up with two in one.

  3. I knew what a gig was so a basket one is easy to visualize, but I wonder about harmers cupboards. I assume it is a place to keep medicines or chemicals that could be harmful. Let us know if you find out.

    1. I will let you know about the harmers cupboard. There are some auctioneers [stamps nowadays] called Harmer. Perhaps it was a cupboard they bought through Harmers the Auctioneers ?
