Chatsworth ~ Beyond Limits ~ 2012/9

OK, before I push my mouse to one side for the evening here's Exhibit No. 9 of the Beyond Limits exhibition at Chatsworth.

It's called Elephant and yes, it's by Barry Flanagan ...

I rather like where this is positioned too ... there's no clutter surrounding it.

It's in between two lines of rather attractive 'wavy' hedges ...

Is it me or is its tail out of proportion though ?

  1. Perfect placement...for an awful piece. Sorry, I just don't care for these elephants. And yes...his tail is way too long.

    1. I thought his tail was too thick ... but I agree it's a good setting.

  2. I think he should have stuck with the Hare, the elephants I've seen don't look like this one.Ann

    1. I should think it's more difficult to work with elephants than hares ~ hares lend themselves to stylisation I would have thought.

  3. There seems to be a sense of motion within the piece ... I have to admit I rather like it.

    1. Barry Flanagan's elephants do have their fans but I have always preferred hares to just about every other animal ~ real or sculpted.

  4. Great positioning, bloody awful sculpture. I just don't like his elephants. The hares are generally much better.

  5. I agree, the tail is way too thick for a tail - but maybe it is like that to get the audience wondering whether that elephant is coming, or going? :)

    1. It looks as though the elephant has an anteater hanging out of its bottom to my way of thinking.

  6. Nice setting, still I think he was doing way better with his hares.

    1. I think you're right Diane. Still, I don't suppose he could spend his the whole of his life sculpting hares.
