Do Birds still make Instant Whip ?

Here we are in May ... and I'm still posting blogs about February.

I obviously hadn't got myself organised on the 21st February 2010 but the sun and the snow drew me outside and I ended up just three miles away from Darley Dale in Old Matlock.

This is St. Giles Church. I lived just two hundred yards up the road from here for 4 or 5 years of my life ...

I used to hear the church bell ring every quarter of an hour ...

St. Giles Church and Matlock ~ 21st February 2010

I wonder whether it still does ?

I got married at St. Giles and I suppose if any church is 'my' church, St. Giles is the one.

Riber Castle stands on the hill above St. Giles. It isn't that old, being built in the 19th century, and late-ish on in the 19th century, by John Smedley who obviously wanted a good view from the top of a hill.

In the churchyard there are a number of Wildgoose graves though none of them are likely to be related to me. We came from eight or ten miles upstream from Matlock ...

Climb a little higher and just beyond the churchyard is the War Memorial on top of a small hillock with wide views of Matlock beyond ...

On the War Memorial it is clear that some 'Matlock' Wildgooses paid the ultimate price ...

There's even a C.Wildgoose but none of them are likely to be related to me unless the link is more than 250 years old.

I crossed the River Derwent and walked up St. John's Road so that I was skirting the lower slopes of Masson Hill. Across the valley there were more views of Riber Castle ...

Is there anything lovelier than walking in an inch or so of snow on a sunny afternoon ?  [As I type this, for some reason, a bowl of Angel Delight has come to mind. I really must get some this afternoon.]

Which leads me to ask the question ~ do Birds still make Instant Whip ?

The sun was sinking lower ...

One of my favourite views is from the lower slopes of Masson Hill ... looking down into Matlock across the valley ...

From here it was a short walk to Snitterton Road and just before the sun slid down behind Masson Hill a final photograph ~ 'Tree With Sun Behind' ...

Not so much a walk, more of a short stroll ...

Length of walk ~ 2 1/2 miles

Total walked so far in 2010 ~ 27 miles

Total walked since records began [1st September 2009 ~ 157 miles]

  1. In answer to my question 'do Birds still make Instant Whip' it appears that if they do it isn't sold in Sainsbury's in Matlock !

  2. They don't - I was a bit of an Instant Whip addict, and I bought my last sachet (after scouring supermarkets to find the last dwindling stocks) in the year 2000. :-(

  5. It must have something to do with the Derbyshire Dales mentality ! Nice to hear from you Dave and Pauline ... I hope you're warmer than we are right now.

You're right about Angel Delight not be a patch on Instant Whip ~ I fear though that Instant Whip is a thing of the past. Thanks for being in touch ...

  6. i too was a Instant whip (butterscotch) addict and after several years of eating poor immitations (angel delight) i found one which was very similar in taste to Instant whip. It was Morrisons Delight but only a few weeks after finding this they changed suppliers so it was back to the drawing board, after trying Asda, Tesco and other brands i thought i would never find that taste again, but by chance a visit to Sainsbury and their own brand Butterscotch delight was the taste i was looking for so i bought about 40 packs to take home (no sainsbury near home) since then i have found another in Farmfoods made by creamola which is just as nice.

    1. It seems as though it isn't just me then who misses the Instant Whip. They'd never get away with that name now though would they.

      Thanks for commenting.

  9. Ha! I just had a craving for Butterscotch Instant Whip. Googled it and ended up here, looking at pictures of Matlock. I live near London now, but spent 26 years as a resident of Matlock, Matlock Bath and Cromford until 2002. Obviously something magical about that particular pud....

  10. Mine was always Raspberry and if I could get my hands on some I think I would be shouting from the roof tops, that was the best dessert I have ever had.

But I fear it has the away of that old chocolate bar "Secret" if anyone remembers those, a creamy mouse like center on top of a long flat bar of chocolate with a lattice work of chocolate over the top turning the bar into a tube shape, those were my fave and then they just dropped off the face of the earth lol

  13. Birds sold it to Kraft in 2004 who make Angel Delight, so unfortunately I'm gutted to say Birds are unable to put it back into production, as it's thought to have been bought to take away the competition.
