It's funny what you find in the middle of nowhere ...

How many times have I photographed Burbage Brook as it passes under the bridge near Grindleford Station ? Every time I've passed over it with a camera in my hand I should think. Well, here's another ...

A walk from Grindleford ...

It was going to be a good walk ... I was feeling lucky ...

I crossed the bridge over the railway line to enter Coppice Wood  ...

Once I reached the River Derwent I did a sharp left turn and walked downstream ...

I left the wood and entered the fields before Grindleford ... and found a fire extinguisher ...

At the bridge in Grindleford I stopped to admire the old Peak & Northern footpath sign. Is this really over 100 years old ? It's beautiful ...

The paved path leads through the woodland ...

... where, as I have mentioned more than once, I once swung across, Tarzan-style, on a rope. There is a photo ... somewhere.

The paved path continued ...

By the time you reach the southern end of the lane there is a tarmac surface and some typical Derbyshire cottages ...

A couple of hundred yards later there's a distant view of Stoke Hall [built for the Reverend John Simpson] across the Derwent ...

It's called Horse Hay Coppice and lo and behold someone had been coppicing ...

  1. What a well laid path, some of it looks quite old.The sign is great I'm surprised it has lasted so long.As for the extinguisher the mind boggles. I must keep this walk in mind looks like one we would enjoy.Ann

  2. The path from Hathersage to Grindleford beside the river is lovely Ann though I prefer the woodland stretch from Grindleford down to Froggatt. You'll then have to choose which path you follow higher up the hill to get back. You can of course shorten it by making it a walk between Grindleford and Froggatt. There are a number of possibilities.

  3. Excellent walk and photographs, Charlie. I wonder how you would be able to read anything on the back of that first sign?

  5. A very nice walk Charlie, I really enjoyed it. Except for the fire extinguisher. Who on earth leaves one of those lying around like that?

    1. Glad you enjoyed it Mitch. Not sure where the fire extinguisher came from ~ one of the weirder discoveries I have made in this country of ours.

  6. Stoke Hall would make a great setting for a murder mystery. Now I am off to look up coppicing. It is not a word I have heard before. I thought a copse was a thicket, but coppicing?
